Position Overview:
This position serves in a managerial/supervisory capacity to conduct performance management activities and ensure effective onboarding, offboarding, and staff training. The Nurse Practitioner establishes and reviews work assignments and priorities, implements performance improvement strategies, and resolves employee-related issues in collaboration with program management and Human Resources. Additionally, this role provides comprehensive direct patient care within the licensed scope of practice and in accordance with local and state policies and procedures. The Nurse Practitioner is an integral member of the healthcare team, contributing to a safe, supportive, and clinically excellent environment for patients in the VA setting.
Key Responsibilities
A. Management & Supervision
- Serve in a managerial/supervisory capacity to conduct performance management activities and ensure effective onboarding, offboarding, and staff training.
- Establish and review work assignments and priorities.
- Implement performance improvement strategies and resolve employee-related issues in collaboration with program management and Human Resources.
- Ensure staff complete required training and adhere to workplace safety standards.
- Conduct performance monitoring and annual appraisals.
- Establish clear performance expectations and address performance deficiencies in a timely manner in accordance with state guidelines.
- Document underperformance appropriately.
- Support employee growth through regular feedback, coaching, and professional development opportunities.
B. Direct Patient Care
- Provide comprehensive patient care consistent with professional standards and established clinical protocols.
- Obtain complete medical histories and document findings in a systematic, accurate, and concise manner.
- Review patient history and evaluate patient status during each visit.
- Interview patients to verify medical history, assess current complaints, treatment history, systems review, and family/social history.
- Perform comprehensive and accurate physical examinations.
- Order, perform, and interpret routine laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Review laboratory and diagnostic results and modify plans of care as clinically appropriate.
- Administer and prescribe medications, including controlled substances, within the guidelines of the collaborative practice agreement and applicable regulations.
- Develop and implement individualized health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance plans.
- Provide health education and counseling to patients and families.
- Perform periodic health assessments and preventive health screenings.
- Provide ongoing clinical management of patients.
- Co-manage patients with selected health complications in collaboration with the supervising physician.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment and care management plans.
- Arrange referrals to specialists, members of the healthcare team, community providers, and other community resources as appropriate.
- Coordinate continuity of care and follow up on referrals, diagnostic testing, and treatment plans.
- Perform nursing assessments and may direct other clinical staff in carrying out patient care activities within the scope of practice.
- Perform laboratory testing and clinical measurements as required.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and timely patient documentation in accordance with regulatory, legal, and organizational standards.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection prevention activities, and patient safety programs.
- Maintain professional competency through continuing education and participation in professional development activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned within the scope of licensure and organizational needs.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program required.
- Certifications: Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in the state of practice required. National Board Certification in specialty area required. Current CPR/BLS certification required. DEA registration required.
- Experience: Minimum two years of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner preferred. Prior supervisory or management experience preferred. Experience in VA or government healthcare settings preferred.
- Skills: Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to handle unusual or crisis situations calmly and effectively. Ability to communicate clearly with center staff, patients, caregivers, and family members. Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making abilities.

Working Conditions
- Perform patient assessments and procedures regularly with or without the use of mechanical devices as indicated.
- Work with patients with varying cognitive levels, physical and sensory impairments, limited social supports, declining health, and at end-of-life.
- Communicate and interact with healthcare staff, patients' caregivers, and family members on a daily basis.
- Prepare for the possibility of unexpected crisis situations to occur.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds. Position requires standing less than 33% of time on duty, walking less than 33% of time on duty, and sitting between 33% and 66% of time on duty. Use of hands to finger, handle, or feel over 66% of time on duty. Reaching with hands or arms less than 33% of time. Full ability to talk and hear. Correctable vision required.
