Summary:
The Department of Neurology at UNC Chapel Hill is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our Sleep Medicine team. This position offers the opportunity to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care for pediatric and adult patients with a wide spectrum of sleep disorders while working alongside nationally recognized neurologists, sleep specialists, trainees, and interdisciplinary healthcare professionals in an academic medical center.
The APP will provide outpatient clinical care, participate in patient education, collaborate in multidisciplinary treatment planning, and contribute to the academic mission through teaching, quality improvement, and potential clinical research opportunities.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Responsibilities:
* Conduct comprehensive evaluations of new and established pediatric and adult patients with sleep disorders.
* Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with conditions including:
* Obstructive and central sleep apnea
* Insomnia
* Restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder
* Narcolepsy and hypersomnia disorders
* Parasomnias
* Circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders
* REM sleep behavior disorder
* Develop individualized treatment plans using current evidence-based guidelines.
* Order, interpret, and discuss sleep diagnostic testing, including home sleep apnea testing and polysomnography, in collaboration with supervising physicians.
* Initiate and manage positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy and monitor treatment adherence and effectiveness.
* Prescribe medications and non-pharmacologic therapies within scope of practice.
* Coordinate care with neurology subspecialists, primary care providers, pulmonologists, behavioral sleep psychologists, and other healthcare professionals.
* Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment options, sleep hygiene, and long-term disease management.
* Document patient encounters accurately and efficiently within the electronic medical record.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
* Evaluate scheduled patients independently in outpatient sleep medicine clinics.
* Review referrals, prior medical records, diagnostic testing, and imaging
* Perform comprehensive sleep and neurological histories and focused physical examinations.
* Review and interpret sleep study results
* Develop treatment recommendations and discuss shared decision-making with patients.
* Manage PAP therapy initiation, compliance, troubleshooting, and follow-up.
* Respond to patient messages, medication refill requests, and clinical questions through the electronic health record.
* Coordinate diagnostic testing, specialty referrals, and follow-up appointments.
* Communicate with referring providers regarding patient progress and recommendations.
* Maintain accurate documentation, coding, and billing consistent with institutional standards.
Academic Responsibilities:

* Participate in clinical research and scholarly activities as opportunities arise.
* Attend weekly division and departmental conferences, grand rounds, and continuing education programs.
* Maintain current knowledge of advances in neurology and sleep medicine.

Education Requirements:
• Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina. PA or FNP Preferred.
• Board certification if required by the Department. DEA.
Professional Experience Requirements:
• No prior experience required.

Preferred but NOT required:
* Prior experience in Neurology, Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, or Internal Medicine.
