After many years of discussion, the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) will offer PAs Certificates of Added Qualification in 5 specialties, beginning in 2011. Dr. Don Sefcik, chairman of the NCCPA, joins host Lisa Dandrea Lenell to explain what it takes to obtain certification, what the benefits are to PAs, and why the NCCPA decided to institute the certification now, with the nation's healthcare system in flux.

Dr. Donald Sefcik is the senior associate dean in the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University (MSU), where he is also a professor in the department of family and community medicine. Prior to working at MSU, he was the associate dean and a professor at Midwestern University's Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and the program director for the Community Health Resource Center. Dr. Sefcik has been involved in the training and assessment of healthcare providers for over 20 years. Dr. Sefcik is a member of several organizations, including the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) and the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP). Dr. Sefcik has received many prestigious honors and awards, such as the Mentor Hall of Fame Award given by the AOA, MWU's Student Choice Award (twice), and the Golden Apple Award given by the graduating class of Midwestern University's physician assistant program (three times). Dr. Sefcik has served on the board of directors for NCCPA since 2003 and serves as chairman of the board for 2010.
 

Lisa LenellLisa Dandrea Lenell is a physician assistant and the director of operations for an internal medicine practice in Illinois. She is passionate about bringing physician assistant and nurse practitioner issues into the spotlight, focusing on awareness and understanding of the professions. Mrs. Lenell is a graduate of the Physician Assistant Program at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. She has continued her relationship with Midwestern University, working as adjunct faculty. She has published in the prestigious peer-reviewed medical journal Dermatologic Surgery and has been featured in several professional journals.
