Since 1990 the role of the nurse practitioner has become a vital part of healthcare in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. NPs have also given tirelessly their expertise in world crises like the earthquake in Haiti. Host Mimi Secor discusses with Dr. Joyce Pulcini, assistant professor at Boston College Connell School of Nursing, the roles that NPs play in different countries and her ground breaking research that looks at the overall impact nurse practitioners have on the medical community worldwide.

Mimi Secor, MS, FNP-BC, FAANP earned her master's degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts in 1995 and her master's degree in education from Antioch University in Cambridge in 1979.She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, on the board of directors for the Nurse Practitioners Associates for Continuing Education, and member of a number of professional organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau, the Honor Society of Nursing; the American Nurses Association; the Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners, of which she is a founder; and the American College of Clinicians, a national organization for nurse practitioners and physician assistants.Ms. Secor has received several awards for her services and accomplishments in patient care and in education, and has published numerous articles and book chapters on topics including women's health, contraception, the pelvic exam, menopause, and sexually transmitted infections.
Dr. Joyce Pulcini is an associate professor at Boston College Connell School of Nursing with over 30 years' experience as a pediatric nurse practitioner, educator and author. Bringing her expertise to panels for the American Academy of Nursing, International Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse Network, and National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), Dr. Pulcini has also contributed to more than 200 articles, textbooks and presentations about topics ranging from postpartum depression to improvements in nurse practitioner education and health policy. She has served 10 years on the INP/APN Network and since 2004 served as chair of the education/practice subgroup.Dr. Pulcini has been a recipient of the NONPF's Outstanding Nurse Practitioner Educator award and recognized as an Outstanding Nurse Practitioner Leader of the Year by The Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Pulcini received her MS from Boston University and her PhD from Brandeis University's Florence Heller School.
