Texting, Sextng and Other New Childhood Social Media Challenges
by Daniel Wood, PA-C, MPAS - May 13, 2012   Bookmark and Share
Recent studies state that as much as 20% of teens have sent a sext message.  Sexting refers to when refers to sending a text message with pictures of children or teens that are inappropriate, naked or engaged in sex acts.   This may have an enduring impact on the child who sent and received the message. This lecture will focus on tips that parents and health care providers can use when talking with preteens and teens.

Tips:

  • Talk to your kids on a regular basis about social media “Have you heard of sexting?” “Tell me what you think it is.” “What did you post on facebook today.”
  • Examples should be age appropiate.  Younger children with cell phones  should know that pictures should not be sent without people without clothes.  Older children, use the word “sexting” and how it is an act of pornography.
  • Peer pressure plays a major factor in the sending of text. Collecting cell phones at gatherings of preteens and teens is one way to reduce this temptation.
