In the Navy: The Nurse Practitioner’s Role
on Partners in Practice
 

Nurse practitioners can be found in all branches of the military. NPs are deployed to all areas of the globe, wherever there are soldiers— from war zones to humanitarian efforts. How does a career as a Navy NP differ from a civilian NP? Captain Linnea Axman, lead research administrator, project director and family nurse practitioner at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California, joins host Mimi Secor to talk about her career in the Navy, what role nurse practitioners have in the military and the opportunities the Navy offers to NPs.

                                                     
Mimi Secor, MS, FNP-BC, FAANP  earned her master's degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts in 1995 and her master's degree in education from Antioch University in Cambridge in 1979.She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, on the board of directors for the Nurse Practitioners Associates for Continuing Education, and member of a number of professional organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau, the Honor Society of Nursing; the American Nurses Association; the Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners, of which she is a founder; and the American College of Clinicians, a national organization for nurse practitioners and physician assistants.Ms. Secor has received several awards for her services and accomplishments in patient care and in education, and has published numerous articles and book chapters on topics including women's health, contraception, the pelvic exam, menopause, and sexually transmitted infections.

 

 Captain Linnea Axman assumed her duties as lead research administrator, project director, and family nurse practitioner at Naval Medical Center San Diego in 2009 after successfully completing an assignment as chief operating officer of the Naval School of Health Sciences in San Diego. She has also been appointed to the role of Navy Medicine West Regional Research integrity Leader in support of the navy surgeon general's special assistant for ethics and integrity. Her clinical practice and research interests and efforts include development of culturally appropriate instruments for use in cross-cultural environments, and the effects of structural barriers on the delivery of care at home and abroad. Captain Axman holds a doctorate in public health from The George Washington University, a master of science in nursing as a family nurse practitioner from the University of Kentucky, and a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Michigan. Captain Axman is a graduate of the United States Naval War College and is a fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).n the Navy Nurse Corps, her assignments have included emergency department staff and charge nurse, US Naval Hospital Guam; family nurse practitioner operation GTMO (joint task force),Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; health services division officer and family nurse practitioner, Washington Navy Yard Branch Medical Clinic; special assistant for women's health, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), Senior Nurse Executive for the Directorate of Professional Education at Naval Medical Center San Diego, which included appointments as department head for nursing research and analysis and department head for staff education and training. Captain Axman was the Department of Defense core team representative on the US government team for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in Sub-Saharan Africa from January 2004 to May of 2006. She completed a six-month deployment to Kuwait as officer in charge of the troop medical clinic at Camp Doha and as a primary care provider at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait in 2006. Captain Axman served as president of the Uniformed Nurse Practitioner's Association (UNPA) from November 1997 until June of 1999; as a military representative to the defense advisory committee on women in the services DACOWITS) in 1999; and to women in NATO in 2000. She is a 2006 alumni of and secretary for the interagency institute for federal health care executives, and received the prestigious Recent Alumni Achievement Award from The George Washington University in September 2007.She is a member of the American Public Health Association, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, and the Delta Omega National Public Health Honor Society. Captain Axman's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), and various service awards.
