| HAPPY NURSES WEEK |

“HAPPY NURSES WEEK” (May 6-12) - not to my NP colleagues, as they have their own NP week, and not to my PA colleagues who came from the ranks of nursing, as you also have a week; but to the RNs and LPNs, that help millions of people each day in every area of medicine and nursing. It seems to me that if we PAs and NPs each get a week of our own, nursing should have another bonus week added to their week. They really are the glue that holds the healthcare system together and while our professions are poorly understood, nursing has for too long stood in the shadows of physicians. Often forgotten, often unappreciated, it is a tribute to the many strong nurses over the years who persevered to make the profession what it has become today. One much more recognized as a strong, intelligent, critical profession ready to tackle some of our most important public health problems. So much so, the Institute of Medicine called for nursing to take a leadership role in the future of medical care in this country. A far cry from even 15 years ago.
If you are an NP or PA (and especially if you are a PA), take the next week and make it special for the nurses you work with. Take someone out to lunch and learn something about them. Connect as colleagues. Give them a “Thank you” from all of us.
Happy Nurses Week to all.
Dave has been a PA, and later NP, leader for thirty years. He strongly believes that NPs and PAs must work together to insure a better future for both professions. Most recently Dave has been busy launching another dream; Clinician 1, the first internet community for PAs and NPs. In October 2008, Dave was honored by the New Jersey State society of PAs with its “Lifetime Achievement Award”.
