Exotic Opportunities for NP and PA Employment
by Bob Blumm, MA, PA-C, DFAAPA - November 9, 2010   Bookmark and Share
Back about two months ago I was one of a few that were requested to focus on something related to jobs, after all, this site is AdvancedPracticeJobs. I started by utilizing the subject “Non Traditional Jobs and How to Find Them.” My first article defined a nontraditional role and the second was related to the identity of your network. With this contribution I mentioned journals and Internet sites that are all about NPs/PAs discovering potential employment solutions. My third contribution to this series relates to those jobs that I consider “exotic” because they are not on everyone’s personal radar. Sorry that I have not written on this site for a month but September through November are busy conference months for a speaker and I have been traveling throughout the country. Next week is the AFPPA meeting in Colorado Springs which promises to be spectacular, and then I am free from the circuit until February. So, what are some exotic opportunities that are waiting for you? Feel bold and adventurous? Then how about enlisting as an NP/PA in the Armed Forces of the United States. Our men and women in uniform continue to need medical professionals that have the courage and the skills to deploy with them and to be the safety net when injured. Not all of the enlistees will go to a combat zone but all will be trained better than they can even imagine and be fit for any job in their future. Promotions are rapid for PAs and NPs and the satisfaction that goes along with the job is unbeatable. Uncle Sam is looking for a few good women and men to say yes to a career filled with new adventures and the opportunity of standing proudly before the flag of our country.

With all of the emphasis on terrorism and protecting our country from all enemies foreign and domestic, have you thought of employment as a PA/NP in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) or the Federal Bureau of Investigation or NCIS? These are all specialized jobs for people that have law enforcement and federal service ingrained in their hearts. The networks have numerous openings for those interested in Interesting European Opportunities. The Alaskan Pipeline which supplied high paying jobs in the early 70’s is once again looking for top medical providers such as NPs and PAs. There’s nothing as exciting as opening your eyes in the morning and looking into the warm brown eyes of a 1200 pound Grizzly. Unforgettable!

Depending on who is in office and how the program pans out, you can think of NASA. Imagine being the first NP or PA to land on Mars or Venus or start a settlement on the moon. For others have you considered Cruise Ships? Mike Champion did last year and I bet he loved it. There are Resorts and Caribbean Islands that could make great use of our skills. There is a need for some to do the “health circuit” there are contemporary opportunities, opportunities to be a national consultant, a hospital consultant, there is the Tsunami of Retail Healthcare Clinics that are washing ashore daily. There are surgical companies that need first assistants, but be careful concerning noncompete agreements in their contract. As a matter of fact, pay an attorney to read the contract and protect your back, as these business men can be a bit aggressive. There are state and federal agencies, US Embassies, large American and foreign companies that can utilize you in a form of Occupational Medicine. We need more researchers, journalists and speakers that have passion. Lastly, let me not forget or discourage those that have a spiritual life and a concern for ministering to people in other lands with their dual abilities in medicine, missions and theology. It is written,” If you have done it for the least of these, my children, you have done it to me.”

Yes folks, there are other jobs out there that require vision and courage and a desire to be a trailblazer but they will pay well and be fun. Don’t settle for being a house officer unless you love that responsibility. Don’t settle for the inner city medical job or even suburbia when there are so many rural communities that need your services. We are healers and we are servants and we need to love what we are doing in order to excel. Get out there, as the world is YOUR oyster.
