What does the clinician, especially the NP or PA, considering changing specialties need to know in order to make such a transition? How can continuing education add to a clinician’s skills and marketability? Jay Chamberlain, a physician assistant with a background in vascular surgery and emergency medicine, and the founder of a recruitment and continuing education company, talks with host Tim Rush about how clinician's can more easily make a specialty change into a reality.

| Your presentation was very informative and encouraging. It has reemphasize for me how the significance of mid-level provider is a valuable member of the health team, Nursing, Physician, Midlevels, ie. PA & NP. The discussion mentioned NCCPA's sub-specialty recognition and certification. I am a product of the Army PA Program who fortunately practiced WorldWide as a Preventive Medicine and Tactical Advisor to the Command and direct medical spokesman for the Commander. My job also required primary, acute ambulatory and family practice type care to the soldiers and their dependents. On retirement I found myself extending into civilian occupational health, workcomp, acute care and auto accident insurance care. 2003 I returned to the military setting as a Civ Provider PA and 2006 added TBI provider and pyschologial screener for PTSD on our deployed and returning combat forces, for the Dept of Defense. However, only recognized by NCCPA as a Primary Medicine Mid-Level/PA qualified to perform acute or family practice type medicine. Due to this presentation I am motivated to ask NCCPA to add Occupational Health to their list of certification, and for myself look into formal certification as a psychiatric provider/PA which hopefully allow to use this to help Veterans seeking assistance thru the VA system dealing with PTSD. |
