“A Medical Practice Does Well by Doing Good” – on Partners in Practice

The Aspen Family Medical Group in the farming town of Modesto, California, has found success for 20 years as a clinic practice and as part of the larger community, with a novel business model. They accept all types of insurance, charge $40 for a physical exam, turn no one away because of inability to pay, welcome walk-ins, provide prescriptions at a cost of $4 or give them away for free, and share profits with employees. How does this work? PA/NP Matt Freitas, vice president of the clinic, talks to host Lisa Dandrea Lenell.

Barrie Abbott ( rural Southern California) on 20 May 2010 at 5:17 pm

I was very interested to see this article. I seem to be unable to access the whole interview. I co-owned a practice many years ago which was an "artistic" success but not necessarily a financial one though it endured 11 years... I am considering doing this again. I'm very frustrated with the limitations we have to deal with and would enjoy discussing strategies with someone. The HMO's and added restrictions on office use of lab and x-ray use, eliminated or severely limited medical care for approximately 15,000 people in this rural service area.
